Impressive Life · Grow House

A grow house. Lettuce. The legal kind.

A vertical growing warehouse: an indoor farm with racks stacked to the ceiling, leafy greens grown under lights, and as little water as we can get away with. A direction, not a service yet.

Una nave de cultivo vertical: estanterías hasta el techo, luz artificial, poca agua. Una dirección, todavía no un servicio.

The story · La historia

Lots of sun. Not much rain.

So we’re thinking of going indoors. And up.

Spain’s dry south has sunshine to spare and not much rain. Plenty of food is grown here, and a lot of the water for it comes from underground. An aquifer never sends an invoice. It just gets lower, and one day somebody’s well gives a cough.

So here is the direction: take the growing inside. A warehouse, racks stacked floor to ceiling, leafy greens grown under lights instead of under the weather. Water that goes round instead of away.

“Low water” is the ambition, not a measurement, and we will not pretend otherwise until there is something to measure.

El sur seco de España tiene sol de sobra y poca lluvia. La dirección: cultivar dentro, en una nave, con estanterías hasta el techo y luz artificial, gastando la menor cantidad posible de agua. “Poca agua” es la ambición, no una medición.

Hacia arriba · Upwards

Grow up.
Literally.

Crecer hacia arriba. Literalmente.

Lights on all night, racks to the ceiling, very quiet neighbours. The only thing growing suspiciously fast is lettuce.

The plan we’re exploring · El plan

Stack it. Light it. Loop the water.

Apilar. Iluminar. Recircular el agua.

  1. 01

    Indoors, in a warehouse.

Inside a building, the weather stops being the boss. Heat, shade and humidity become things you set, not things you hope for.

Dentro. En una nave, el tiempo deja de mandar.

  2. 02

    Racks, stacked to the ceiling.

Growing in layers instead of one flat field. The floor is the same size; the farm goes up.

En vertical. Estanterías por capas, hasta el techo.

  3. 03

    Grown under lights.

Each layer gets its own grow lights. Leafy greens are the obvious place to start.

Bajo luz. Cada nivel con su propia iluminación.

  4. 04

Water that goes round, not away.

What the roots don’t take is collected and sent round again, instead of draining into the ground.

Recircular. Lo que las raíces no usan vuelve al circuito.

  5. 05

Measure it, or it’s a brochure.

Every idea above is only worth what it shows on a meter. Until there is a meter, it stays an idea.

Medir. Sin medición, es un folleto.

Seedlings Bedtime is whenever we switch the lights off.

Racks One floor. Several storeys of salad.

Other grow houses keep the curtains shut. We’d leave them open. It’s lettuce.Otras “naves de cultivo” cierran las cortinas. Nosotros las dejaríamos abiertas. Es lechuga.

Para quién · Who it might be for

For people with a building, a question, or the answer.

  • ·

Growers who know the water bill. And the water table, better than anyone.

Agricultores que conocen la factura del agua.

  • ·

Owners of an empty warehouse. Four walls and a roof are a decent start.

    Propietarios de una nave vacía.

  • ·

Engineers and researchers in indoor growing. If you are already doing this properly, we would like to listen first.

Ingenieros e investigadores del cultivo interior.
